cosmicut 3.2 dropped

CosmiCut 3.2 adds video cropping for ordinary and spatial clips, plus a fix for crashes during 2D-to-3D conversion.

CosmiCut v3.2 is now available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro!

CosmiCut 3.1 gave clips a better sense of direction. Version 3.2 gives them boundaries: you can now crop videos.

Pick an aspect ratio, frame the important bit, and scrub through the clip to make sure it stays important.

Cropping, but for the whole video

Open a clip in the Clip Editor and you can now crop it using freeform bounds or one of the included aspect ratios. Drag the crop where you want it, resize it, and preview the result before applying it.

It turns out that a video is not one image. So the crop editor includes a timeline scrubber. You can jump through different frames in the clip and see both what is inside the crop and what the finished frame will look like.

Yes, this is a custom cropper

Apple provides system interfaces for cropping still photos, but there is no equivalent API for video. So this is a custom SwiftUI view that handles the crop box, aspect-ratio presets, dimmed region, live frame previews, and the result that gets handed to CosmiCut’s render pipeline.

Spatial video or not, it just works

Cropping works with ordinary 2D video and Spatial Video. The interaction is the same, and CosmiCut carries the crop through preview and export without making you think about the format of the clip underneath it.

This is the part of CosmiCut I keep enjoying: bringing basic video-editing tools to Spatial Video even when Apple has not built them. Cropping should not become an exotic workflow just because a video has a left eye and a right eye.

And one important crash fix

CosmiCut 3.2 also fixes a crash that could happen during 2D-to-3D conversions. Not as photogenic as the crop editor, but significantly more fun than watching an ambitious conversion turn into a trip back to the Home Screen.

CosmiCut v3.2 is on the App Store now. As always, if you find something weird, please let me know. Weird remains alarmingly useful release planning.
